How Does an Air Source Heat Pump Work?

An air source heat pump absorbs heat from the outside air — even when it is cold — and transfers it into your home's heating system. It uses a refrigerant cycle to concentrate this heat and then distributes it through your radiators, underfloor heating or a hot water cylinder.

The outdoor unit contains a fan and an evaporator coil that draws in air. Even at temperatures as low as -15°C, the air still contains usable thermal energy. The heat pump compresses this energy to raise the temperature to a level that can heat water for your radiators and taps.

Because heat pumps move heat rather than generate it by burning fuel, they are significantly more efficient than traditional boilers. A well-designed system should deliver three to four units of heat for every one unit of electricity it uses — what engineers call a Coefficient of Performance (COP) of 3 to 4.

The outdoor unit is positioned and connected to the indoor heating system. Most installations take two to four days depending on the complexity of the project.
