Air-to-Air Heat Pumps in Kent
Air-to-air heat pumps provide both heating and cooling from a single wall-mounted unit. They are an excellent choice for rooms that overheat in summer — including loft conversions, home offices, garden rooms and south-facing bedrooms — while also providing efficient warmth in winter.

How Air-to-Air Heat Pumps Work
An air-to-air heat pump moves heat between the outside air and the inside of your home. In winter, it extracts heat from the outdoor air and releases it indoors. In summer, the process reverses — it removes heat from your room and expels it outside, cooling your space.
The indoor unit is typically wall-mounted and operates quietly. The outdoor unit is compact and can be positioned on a wall bracket or ground-level plinth.
Unlike air-to-water heat pumps, air-to-air systems do not heat water for radiators or provide domestic hot water. They condition the air directly in the room — much like modern air conditioning, because that is essentially what they are.
Cooling in Summer
Actively cools rooms that overheat — loft conversions, conservatories, south-facing rooms and home offices.
Heating in Winter
Provides efficient warmth without needing a wet heating system. Ideal as supplementary heating for specific rooms.
Quiet Operation
Modern units are designed to be very quiet, with indoor noise levels often below 25dB — quieter than a whisper.
Where Air-to-Air Systems Work Best
Loft Conversions
Loft rooms often overheat in summer and can be difficult to heat efficiently in winter. An air-to-air unit solves both problems.
Home Offices
Maintain a comfortable working environment year-round with precise temperature control.
Garden Rooms
Garden rooms and annexes that are separate from the main heating system benefit greatly from their own air-to-air unit.
Bedrooms
South-facing or top-floor bedrooms that become uncomfortably warm can be cooled quietly for a better night's sleep.
Extensions
New extensions that are not easily connected to the main central heating system can use an air-to-air unit for both heating and cooling.
Small Commercial
Offices, treatment rooms and small retail spaces benefit from controllable heating and cooling throughout the year.
A Note on Grants
Air-to-air heat pumps are not eligible for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant. The grant currently only applies to air-to-water and ground source heat pumps. CPSL Kent can explain the options if you are unsure which type is right for you.
